Marcos Evangelista de Moraes, Cafu said, born June 7, 1970 in São Paulo, is a former Brazilian


 international footballer.

Also dubbed Pendolino, Cafu discovered the high level at São Paulo FC, where he won the early 1990s many titles, including the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup twice. In 1997, he discovered the Italian League, AS Roma and AC Milan, where he won the most prestigious titles: the Champions League and World Club Cup.

Capped 142 times for the national team between 1990 and 2006 (a record for Brazil), he won the World Cup in 1994 and in 2002 as captain. His outstanding track record makes him one of the best fullbacks rights in the history of the sport. In 2004 he was also chosen by Pele in the list of 125 best living footballers.

Debut at the Sao Paulo FC [edit | edit the code]
Marcos Evangelista de Moraes began his career in 1988 at São Paulo FC2. Noted for its endurance, speed and ability to project themselves in attack, he quickly dubbed Cafu, in homage to former Brazilian right winger Cafuringa (en) 3.

Cafu quickly knows great success with his club. Brazilian champion in 1991, São Paulo won the Copa Libertadores in 1992 and 1993, the Intercontinental Cup twice (against FC Barcelona and AC Milan) and the South American Recopa in 1993 and 1994.

Arrival in Europe and then return to Brazil [edit | edit the code]
In January 1995, Cafu joined Spanish club Real Saragosse4. This year the club won the European Cup Winners Cup, but the Brazilian does not appear on the scoresheet in the final and even makes his return in the month of May in Brazil. The Parmalat group wants to sign him to Palmeiras, but the transfer is not possible because of a clause of the contract signed with the player to his departure in Spain that banned him from returning directly to another club São Paulo. The food group then made the sign Juventude, another Brazilian club which he is the sponsor, to circumvent the ban.

Eventually transferred to Palmeiras in the summer, and it imposes it will definitely earns its place selection.

Cafu to Roma [edit | edit the code]
During summer 1997, Cafu was transferred to AS Roma in Italy, where he quickly became one of the key players in the team. Very offensive side able to cover the whole right side, he acquires the nickname he Pendolino, referring to Italian tilting train Pendolino2.

Fourth and sixth Serie A during his first two seasons in Rome, he then saw Fabio Capello take charge of the team, which witnessed the birth of Francesco Totti, soon reinforced by the forwards Vincenzo Montella and Gabriel Batistuta or defender Walter Samuel. The result is immediate, the Romans won the Italian championship in 2001 and finished second in the following season, to a point of Juventus after a tight struggle for the title.

End of career at Milan [edit | edit the code]
In 2003 he joined AC Milan, who finds her crown champion in 2004. Arrived in the final of the Champions League in 2005, Milan lead 3-0 at half time against England but Liverpool are joined and finally beaten on penalties. The next season is more difficult, Cafu, 35, begins to experience problems with his knee.

It must also deal with a judicial investigation opened in 2004 for use of a false passport that would have allowed the player to acquire Italian citizenship while playing at AS Rome5. Author of a dashed season, he was finally acquitted in juin6 after the Rome prosecutors have required nine months in prison against lui7.

However, it retains the confidence of his club extending his contract until 20082 and to which it gives reason for finally winning his first Champions League in 2007, taking its revenge in the finals on the Liverpool club. In the process he won the UEFA Super Cup and World Club Cup. It puts an end to his professional career in 2008 at the end of his contract with AC Milan.

In December 2008, to the surprise of observers, the media announce the arrival of the player to 142 caps in the modest team Garforth Town, club anglaise8 8th division. But eventually the transfer does not materialize.

In Seleçao, Cafu remains the replacing Jorginho, holder at the time of the World Cup 1994. But while Brazil clash in the final the Italians, Jorginho is injured after 22 minutes, and Cafu and hassle most of the final, eventually won on penalties (0-0, 3-2 on pens) 9.

In 1997, he won the Copa América with a selection where it forms a pair with Roberto Carlos very offensive side defenders, unparalleled in the world.10

Indisputable national team, he reached the final of the 1998 World Cup, but can not prevent the final defeat by the French (0-3). This console the following year by winning the 1999 Copa América.

Captain of the Seleção in 2001, he led his fellow Brazilians to their fifth title of world champion in 2002.11 Cafu became the first player in history to have played in three finals consécutives2 World Cup. A few months later, he was called in World Cup selection, opposite to Real Madrid, during the club's centenary events.

In the summer of 2006, despite a season marked by injuries, he participated in his fourth World Cup, in which Brazil was eliminated in the quarterfinals by France.
