His debut [edit | edit the code]
At age 10, his father gives him a choice between Inter Milan and AC Milan Paolo Maldini chooses the latter club. Legend has it that, during testing, Nereo Rocco went to get a license would be running as he was impressed by the young son of Cesare. From an early age he showed great potential, moved up the ranks at the Primavera (youth team), and silenced all those who marked him as present only thanks to the status of his father.

It is launched by Nils Liedholm, former teammate of his father Cesare and legend of world football, 20 January 1985 at the age of 16 years and 208 days in a match against Udine. It becomes incumbent upon the 1985-1986 season, and one of the greatest Italian hopes. He celebrates his first cap for the national team of Italy March 31, 1988 in the former Yugoslavia. Of Serie A to the Champions League via the Intercontinental Cup, his record and experience will growing. He holds an unbeaten record of 58 games unbeaten and 929 minutes of inviolability. The defense he forms with Baresi, Costacurta and Tassotti remains to this day one of the best that Europe has ever known.

He was selected in 1990 for the world in his country. He wears the number 7 and achieves good benefits but Italy failed to reach the final, eliminated on penalties by Argentina of Diego Maradona in his den of Naples. Italy finished 3rd in the competition by winning against England.

However, it is a success with AC Milan, 3 wins in the Champions League, including the famous final won 4 goals to 0 against FC Barcelona Johan Cruyff called "dream team". In this regard, Maldini said in May 2009 that it was the best match in the history of Milan. 1 UEFA Super Cup, three Italian championships and an Intercontinental Cup. During this period, he acquired a huge reputation in the international football through its performance.

He participates with Italy in the World Cup taking place in the United States. Italy was beaten by Brazil in the final in the penalty shootout. Despite the title of Italian champion, the Milanese club between declining. Paolo Maldini, who also recovered the cuff of captain Franco Baresi, is one of the few players to have ensured its status, realizing good benefits. But alone is not enough to save the team and the Milan does not get the desired results. At the same time, it contributes greatly to the qualification of the Azzurri, then coached by his father, for the global 1998. During this world after a difficult tournament start, the team managed to climb in the quarterfinals against France. Paolo Maldini to realize his best game, by defeating the attackers of the team of France. But Italy is eliminated during the session of the free throws.

In Milan, and after a crisis 2 years, the team was rebuilt around the frames, Maldini, Costacurta and Albertini. After a nice end of the season, the team won the title of Italian champion. After Euro 2000 lost the final by a golden goal, Paolo Maldini holds the record for national team Dino Zoff with 126 appearances after the 2002 World Cup, leaving the team after the failure against the Italian South Korea. So he leaves the Italian selection without having won a single title, and unlucky because eliminated on penalties World Cup 3 times.

2003 marks a new turning point in the career Maldini, the club won the Champions League, the fourth of his career at 40 years apart to the day of that won by his father. During the 2004 season, he gradually slides down the middle associated with Nesta and Kaladze.

In 2005, AC Milan reached the final again, facing the English club Liverpool, but lost this time (3-3, 3 penalty shoot a 2), Maldini has also scored the first goal of the match a recovery-confident volley after 51 seconds of play: this is the record for the fastest goal scored in a Champions League final. It was after this season that he began to consider retirement, complaining of recurrent knee pain. However, it still piles up again every year and raises for the 5th time in 2007, the "cup with big ears." He received that year, and despite his 38 years, the title of best European defender of the season.

Paradoxically, AC Milan seems those years just focus on the Champions League, the club have often shown some irregularities in the league, while being ubiquitous on the European stage.

Proof of compliance that requires the public, yet Intéristes supporters known for their radicalism unfurled a banner during the last Milan derby which Maldini has participated. The fans worshiped him "Maldini, our rival for 20 years, for 20 years, always loyal."

However, in his last match at the San Siro in Milan's colors, some fans unfurled a banner that read "Thanks Captain! You were blameless in the field, but you disrespect to those who adored you, "referring to remarks made against supporters1. The reason for such animosity is explained first in a Milan-Parma the 1997-1998 season: the ultras of the southern curva start throwing oranges on the ground to show their discontent. The match was suspended by the Italian Football Federation, and Parma wins the match by forfeit. Paolo Maldini defends the club and designates the ultras as solely responsible. The following season, Paolo celebrates title with his teammates and simply ignores these ultras. The break is now consumed. Then comes the final of the Champions League against Liverpool in 2005, during which Maldini waved to the ultras to stop whistling and encourage the team. The last event date of the 2007/2008 season, when the ultras hiss the bad results of the team and Maldini, the captain takes responsibility and reply about them: "They have nothing to do with football, he there has financial motivations, power games. "Such a distance with the South curva out of Baresi Maldini who had made his fétiche2 forum.

Maldini played his 647th (absolute record) and last match of Serie A May 31, 2009 (Fiorentina-Milan). On this occasion, the doorman of Fiorentina Sebastien Frey gave him a commemorative plaque as a token of the friendly city of Florence and the stadium Artemio Franchi has deployed a series of banners dedicated to the glory of Maldini despite the stakes of the match (direct qualification for the Champions League).

Like his former teammate Baresi and his famous number 6, number 3 of Paolo Maldini was officially retired jerseys attributable to AC Milan players.

Technical Specification [edit | edit the code]
If Paolo Maldini is recognized as one of the best defenders in the history, it is because it is probably the first representative of a new type of defender. Before him, except Gaetano Scirea, Beckenbauer and Franco Baresi, the defenders were especially hard players involved over the shins of opponents as the game. But the 1980 change traditional patterns. Attackers are becoming increasingly protected, dangerous contacts are sanctioned and mistakes whistled but more importantly, the back players are asked to participate in the animation of the game. Maldini is the prototype of this new player. Positional sense, good game password and recovery, he'll stand to try to contain the attacker rather than systematically tackle. Good dribbler, very fast, he enjoyed a good quality of centers (right foot or left foot) and animated the Milanese left.

The aura had Paolo Maldini went beyond land: he was known as a man, passionate, humble and generous [ref. required]. We willingly presented him as the model footballer or the ideal son, which is reminiscent of the elegant Giacinto Facchetti [ref. required].

Paolo Maldini has received in his playing a single red card (received early in the season 1994/1995 at the Luigi Berlusconi Trophy - against Bayern Munich - which is an unofficial competition) [ref. required].

Although qu'évoluant often on the left side of defense, Paolo Maldini was "right handed" (although it is ambidextrous).

Towards the last years of his career, despite his age and physical problems including recurring knee, he never really lost his level. Adriano Galliani, vice president of AC Milan, said in May 2008: "If Paolo (Maldini) is still tenured, it is because he is still the best in this position," [ref. required].
